I have incredibly difficult hair. It's naturally wavy and there is a ton of it, but it's incredibly fine. It feels like baby hair. This is a cocktail that only leads to an unmanageable mane and lots of ballerina buns. Most of the time I can make something reasonable happen on my head, but recently I've been really struggling. So when one of Brooklyn's top salons, Fox & Jane, asked me to come by for a complimentary style, I jumped at the chance.
When I arrived at the salon on the corner of Smith and Atlantic in Boerum Hill, my hair was looking flat, tired, and altogether bogus.
See what I mean? ^^
Aside from some sweet natural highlights, my hair was nothing to write home about. So I stepped into the salon hoping to be transformed.
My stylist, Colleen, lead me through the bright, open space and past exposed brick walls to the washing station where she slathered my scalp with R+Co products. If you haven't had the pleasure of using these products yet, I highly recommend it.
The products are deliciously fragrant without smelling like chemicals. There are a lot of rose scented products that do nothing less than delight the senses.
Colleen explained to me why my hair has trouble holding style and volume, and how I can combat that. She layered on texturizes, thickeners, and volumizers all to give me the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders volume I pray for every night.
After a quick blowout, some velcro rollers, and a few more products, the state of my head had improved drastically.
Colleen did a few, quick beachy waves with a curling wand for texture and movement.
And before I knew it, my hair was 12,000 times better than it had been before I walked in the door.
My honest reaction when I looked in the mirror was, "I have Cool Brooklyn Girl hair!"
These loose, edgier waves are all over Brooklyn these days, upping the effortlessly-cool-factor in BK by about a hundred. I'm definitely not effortlessly cool, or effortfully cool for that matter, but the stylists at Fox & Jane sure made my hair look like it!
I can't recommend Fox & Jane highly enough. The salon is beautiful, laid back, and filled with fun, friendly and knowledgable stylists. Colleen gave me a few pointers for pulling off this look all on my own and I think I'll have to give it a go soon!
But for now, I'll just stare out this window...
Who are we kidding, I'll end up making another trip down to Fox & Jane the next time my hair needs a pick me up.
They have multiple locations in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn, and even one in San Diego, so no matter which coast you are on in the US you have some options for getting a truly fantastic hairstyle.
