I love a good massage. No joke, if you are ever wanting to buy me a gift and are at a loss for what to get me, a gift certificate for a massage will make me love you forever and sing your praises from the highest hills. Especially if you hook me up with a massage at Greenhouse Holistic in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
As much as I enjoy a fancy schmancy day spa with champagne and people rushing about making sure I have to do nothing all day, deep down, I prefer spas that are little more earthy (and down to earth). At Greenhouse, you're more likely to feel like you are a member of a community than a member of Louis XVI's court, and you're more likely to have a conversation about how to actually heal your body and feel good than about what a struggle it's been to find an adequate staff for your summer home.
Greenhouse Holistic is a yoga studio and massage center that focuses on healing and growth through functional bodywork. You're not just going to get your run of the mill Swedish Massage here, you're going to get a massage that is tailored to your body's specific needs.
After checking in with Greenhouse Holistic's lovely receptionist, I was led to my room by my massage therapist, Smedley. We chatted about my bum shoulder, my foot arthritis, my baby neck, and my preferred pressure level for massage (I told him to dig in and assured him I'd let him know if I started to cry), and then I was left to get myself on the table.
Turns out, it's pretty tricky to get naked and take pictures (of the room of course, you filthy animals) but I managed to snag one for you.
The space isn't particularly glamorous, but it is warm, earthy, inviting and smells AMAZING. The whole place is filled with the aroma of natural essential oils that instantly relax and calm you and make you want to go dance in a forest like a pixie, goddess woman and shout "Mother Gaia lives in me!"... but like really. It's a naturalistic space in the center of the urban jungle and I half expected to walk out into the redwood forests of California rather than the bustle of Bedford Avenue.
After slipping under the sheets I basically disappeared into one of the best massages ever. Smedley dug right in and focused on loosening up the tension in my upper back and shoulders with expert precision, so I could regain proper alignment. It was a fantastic, top notch massage and I never wanted it to end.
I would highly recommend Greenhouse Holistic to anyone who needs a solid, yet affordable place to get regular massages, or someone who is just looking to treat themselves a bit. An hour-long Swedish Massage is only $80, which is steal anywhere and I assure you, you'll get your money's worth. I've never taken one of their yoga classes, but I am eager to do so.
Check out their website and give Greenhouse a go! If you end up getting in on some Greenhouse yoga action, let me know how it is! I always get a little scared to try new classes for the first time, so some recommendations would be most appreciated.
Now, I know I said I'd love a gift certificate for a massage, buuuuuuut, if you really want to get on my good side, one of Greenhouse's memberships would pretty much make me indebted to you forever. Just sayin'.
