It's been a hellishly hot summer. And the record-breaking heat has me thinking three things: God I sweat a lot, I need to rehydrate, and we need to take better care of our planet so this horribly inconvenient truth of global warming doesn't destroy us all!
While there isn't much I can do about the sweating (it's nature's detox), the latter two concerns are totally things I can do something about.
Luckily, I recently partnered with Harmless Harvest, the first ever Fair-For-Life certified coconut water, to share simple things we can all do to help us live a more sustainable lifestyle.
They were kind enough to send me a hydration kit and some suggestions for how to live more sustainably to share with you all. So let's see what they suggest:
* SUSTAINABLE ACT #1: CONSERVE WATER
Water is a limited resource, and is likely the most important natural resource for us to conserve. Consider how you use water throughout the day: do you turn the faucet off or take short showers? Have you considered limiting your use of a sprinkler? (I hate showering, so this one should be easy).
* SUSTAINABLE ACT #2: GO CARLESS
By going carless and using public transportation, walking, or biking whenever you can, you help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It's great for our air and beneficial to our health. (Living in New York City makes this one a no-brainer. Driving seems like an extreme sport to me after nearly 7 years here).
* SUSTAINABLE ACT #3: SAVE ENERGY
There are many ways you can save energy throughout the day. Switching out old lightbulbs for fluorescent ones (or unplugging your cellphone or laptop once it is fully charged) can lead to monumental levels of energy conservation. No matter how small the amount of energy you save, it all adds up! (This one I need to get better on... I'm a big consumer of phantom energy)
* SUSTAINABLE ACT #4: REDUCE WASTE
Less waste usually means fewer resources to end up at a landfill. Creating a compost pile is a great way to reduce waste and allow your garden to develop rich soil that can be reused to grow more healthy plants. (I actually just started composting a few weeks ago!!!!! I feel such a sense of accomplishment every week when I take the compost for collection and I see exactly how much food I am not wasting. Most cities have compost drop off centers, so do a little google to find yours, get yourself an airtight container, and start composting!)
* SUSTAINABLE ACT #5: SHOP SUSTAINABLE
Choosing to shop sustainable is easier than you think—take a reusable bag with, look for local owners or focus on companies with positive labor practices. As a Fair for Life certified company, Harmless Harvest pays fair wages and supports the wellbeing of local communities. (Reusable bags, check! Local shopping when possible, check! Supporting companies with positive labor practices, CHECK CHECK CHECK!)
This last suggestion is perhaps my favorite not only because it packs the biggest punch of putting your purchasing power behind companies with fair, sustainable, ethical labor practices, but also because it gives me full permission to buy up and drink the most beautiful and Instagramable coconut water of them all. Harmless Harvest!
No no, my friends, that is not rosé. It's coconut water! Harmless Harvest is the only brand that embraces the natural reaction of the coconut liquid's antioxidants with light, which turn the liquid pink! That's right, the liquid starts out clear, then reacts with the light to make this gorgeous pink color and all the other coconut water companies have been treating the water to prevent this from happening. Honestly, I felt a little cheated when I found that out.
With harmless harvest, you also know you are getting the most natural, or as I like to call it "nonsense free" coconut water on the market. It's free of GMOs, Synthetic Fertilizers, Artificial Additives, Toxic Pesticides, and Irradiation. It's just the good stuff.
Plus, the bottle is even BPA free! So, even plastic-phobes, like me, can drink up worry free.
But the thing that really sets this coconut water apart from the rest is its Fair For Life Certification. This unique certification not only means ingredients of all their products are responsibly and sustainably sourced, it means Harmless Harvest demonstrates decent and fair working conditions for ALL their employees, not just those in The States. Their products are also 100% traceable, ensuring their quality and good working conditions throughout their supply chain.
With a certification like that, it's pretty easy to gulp this healthy, hydrating beverage down to the last drop. True story, I accidentally finished the whole bottle while taking photos for this post it was so delicious.
Clean and fresh, this is not your average over-sugared, syrupy coconut water. It's as pure and refreshing as it's certification would suggest and I'll be popping it in my bag to carry around town long past this hot, sweaty summer.
I may or may not also be using it as a replacement for booze. It's fun, pink, and tastes like a treat, without the negative effects of alcohol on my bod. Plus, if you put it in a wine glass, everyone just thinks it's rosé! So, sneaky!
But wait, wait, wait! Harmless Harvest has another organic, Fair for Life beverage!
Do you know what it is?
Are you ready?
COCONUT WATER COFFEE!!!!
I've actually been off coffee for most of the summer (because I felt like it was making me too much of an anxious chihuahua), but when you add coconut to anything, I simply can't resist.
After to first sip I was in love! Not overly coconutty, this coffee beverage tastes like deep, rich chocolate with espresso. I cannot believe it has no added sugars and only 60 calories per serving. Which is a fraction of most coffee drinks.
You can learn more about Harmless Harvest, Fair For Life Certification, and so much more on the Harmless Harvest blog. Seriously, you'll be stunned by this company's dedication to their workers and our gorgeous planet Earth.
So in conclusion, what do we do when we find a delicious, clean, healthy, hydrating, ethical, fair, organic beverage?
Drink up, buttercup!
