Hello and welcome again to the second installment of my Badass Women series. Here we pay homage to women who do what they want and are who they are with aplomb and zero apologies.
Now that last sentence pretty much perfectly sums of up this month's subject, the one and only, Dolly Parton. Dolly has been working in show biz since she was a small child in the mountains of Tennessee and I think it's safe to say no one does it quite like Dolly. She's rhinestoned, big haired big boobed, tiny waisted, made-up within an inch of her life and I'm convinced she would take all of that as a compliment. She is an unparalleled live performer who is known to play 12 instruments and writes not only all her own songs, but has written some of the most iconic songs of the last 50 years for other artists...uhhum I Will Always Love You.
If you aren't familiar with (or think you aren't) with Dolly's work, give Jolene a listen to properly plunge yourself into the fearless, soulful, strong, vulnerable, and fun-filled world of Dolly Parton.
Now listen to 9 to 5.
Dolly is like your super cool aunt who's been through some stuff and gets you just a little bit better than your parents do.
Now I didn't grow up listening to Dolly. In fact my love of country music in general is completely unsupported by my family, with the exception of my late grandpa. That being said, I remember being very young and hearing Dolly tell a story about how Elvis wanted to sing I Will Always Love You, but The Colonel (his butthead manager) wanted to pay Dolly a one-time fee with no royalties. Dolly, knowing her worth and talent and being sure that song was one of the best songs ever written basically told The Colonel to take his measly offer and stick it where the sun don't shine. She held onto it waiting for the right opportunity and one day Whitney Houston and The Bodyguard came calling. The rest is history.
Whitney may have made this song famous and iconic, but hearing Dolly sing it herself is an experience not to be missed.
I remember thinking that it took a serious set of balls (or boobs) to turn down a deal with The King and that any lady who could was a lady worth paying attention to.
Her accomplishments, awards, and contributions to music/film/the world are too many to list here, Dolly is a woman who knows herself, knows her mind, and makes no apologies for living exactly as she wants to even if others don't like or can't understand it. And that is pretty much the definition of a Badass Woman.
If you need a little more Dolly in your life (who doesn't?) here are some lovely products to bring some of Dolly's signature sparkle and sass to your world.
